Research and Development Laboratory Technician

Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented R & D Laboratory Technician to join our growing team at Xyfil. This hybrid role combines responsibilities in formulation, research and development, procurement, and process improvement. You will play a key role in preparing, processing, and scaling up a diverse range of products, including vape e-liquids, CBD drops, and other chemical formulations.

Main Responsibilities

Production & Manufacturing:

  • Process incoming goods, ensuring accurate checking, logging, and inventory management of raw materials.
  • Decant bulk materials and ingredients into appropriately labelled containers or bottles, following strict handling procedures.
  • Fill devices and containers with prepared solutions, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and conformity to product specifications.
  • Mix various ingredients according to established recipes and stated quantities to produce homogeneous final products.
  • Follow all standard operating procedures to maintain high product quality and compliance with ISO9001 and ISO22716 standards.
  • Collect and label samples during production stages for testing and quality control.
  • Maintain the laboratory and production areas in clean, safe, and organised condition.

Research & Development:

  • Assist with the development and testing of new or improved products and processes.
  • Prepare formulations, adjust compositions as needed, and carry out analytical testing to verify product performance.
  • Plan and conduct process trials on laboratory, pilot plant, or factory scale to validate scale-up of new formulations.
  • Support the preparation and dispatch of samples for customer trials and feedback.
  • Document results, perform risk assessments, and propose improvements to formulations or processes.

Procurement & Coordination:

  • Identify raw material needs for both production and new product development projects.
  • Support procurement activities by liaising with suppliers, monitoring stock levels, and ordering materials as required.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams (Operations, Quality, Sales) and external partners (suppliers, customers) to ensure smooth workflow and timely project delivery.

Documentation & Compliance:

  • Accurately maintain all production, procurement, and R&D records, including manual and electronic filing systems.
  • Ensure full batch traceability and compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
  • Support raw material inspections and maintain inventory records in line with quality standards.

Person Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

· Science Masters is preferable, although we will accept BSc science degree, but must be 2:2 or higher.

· Previous experience in manufacturing, laboratory, procurement, or R&D environments is advantageous.

  • Knowledge of chemical formulation, handling, and safety practices.

Skills & Aptitudes:

  • Ability to follow written instructions, procedures, and recipes precisely.
  • Mechanical and manual dexterity to decant, fill, and process materials accurately.
  • Strong numeracy, literacy, and computer skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational ability.
  • Effective communication skills to liaise confidently with colleagues, suppliers, and customers.
  • Capacity to multitask and manage time effectively under pressure.
  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Enthusiasm for product innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Good interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

Other Requirements

  • Expected to comply with all health and safety, product quality, and product safety policies.
  • Willingness to carry out additional tasks as delegated by line managers, as appropriate.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent, Graduate

Pay: £12.21 per hour

Expected hours: 37.5 per week
